We didn’t initially plan to have the GamingIndians Gamer of the Year category, but when a GI member achieves something really significant, you just have to recognise and appreciate it in the best way possible. And it doesn’t get much bigger than winning the FIFA Interactive World Cup national final and being the one to represent India at the grand finals in Barcelona.
Anyone who’s played Omar on PSN, knows how good a FIFA 09 player he really is, so it’s no surprise to see him win the national finals of the FIWC, which were held in Mumbai last year. But not only is he a great player, but he’s also one of the most humble and down to earth guys you could ever meet, and we can’t think of a better person to represent GI and India on the world stage.
Omar Jaleel aka boltonfan is the first ever GamingIndians’ Game of the Year 2008. We’re proud to have him on GI, we’re all proud of what he’s achieved, and we wish him all the best for the world finals. We’re also sending you a few gaming goodies courtesy EA (for when you need a break from FIFA 09). Congratulations.

Well, here it is – the culmination of one year of great games, and one month of voting for GamingIndians Game of the Year 2008. With a PlayStation 3 up for grabs as the prize in this category, we thought that many members would simply vote for the usual suspects in order to win the PS3, rather than for their favourite games. But looking at the top 10 list below, it’s hard to find fault with it. Most would agree that these are the 10 best games of 2008.
Before we proceed to the Top 10 games of the year, check out the winners in the smaller Game of the Year 2008 categories here, and below is the list of the top games voted by GI members from 11 to 20.
11. Burnout Paradise
12. Left 4 Dead
13. Braid
14. Prince of Persia
15. Fable 2
16. Grid
17. Far Cry 2
18. Spore
18. Mirror’s Edge

And now, here they are; the games you picked as GamingIndians’ Top 10 Games of 2008:

The Metal Gear Solid series never made it here; officially at least. But given the fact that a stunning number of gamers voted for the final boss fight in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots to be the Most Epic Gaming Moment of the Year definitely speaks a lot considering it’s glorified fan service without comparison. It melds the best bits of music from the first three games with a sweet, brutal nostalgic punch out that would bring a tear to the eye of any MGS fan or at least anyone who’s watched videos from the first three games. Definitely a worthy, if albeit, old school choice for the gaming moment of 2008.

It’s still hard to believe how much Ready At Dawn were able to get out of the PSP. The most impressive thing about Kratos’s brutal ballet of death is not that it’s visually outstanding (which it is), but that it works so well in almost every department. The controls are sharp, the loading times almost unnoticeable and the gameplay just as good as the last two games. Not surprising then that God of War: Chains of Olympus was chosen both by our staff and our members as the Best Handheld Game of 2008 by such a large margin.

Critics will tell you that Call of Duty: World at War’s single player campaign was inconsistent and the multiplayer was an inferior version of Call of Duty 4. Fans will tell you the single player was breathtakingly intense and multiplayer sublimely balanced. What both will agree upon is that Treyarch finally delivered a game that (albeit flawed) will stand proudly alongside the rest of the series. Better yet, they managed to do an outstanding job of porting it over to all three major systems. Take a bow Treyarch. Honorable mention also goes to Dead Space, which was a close second in the votes (and incidentally was the GI staff pick for the Multiplatform Game of the Year).
